A Trip Down Memory Lane
Originally titled Time Capsule, this film was made entirely of NFB stock shots. The emphasis in A Trip Down Memnory Lane is on historical footage and viewing time compressed rather than exploring a focused or single concept. Lipsett shows us bits of time almost like an anthropologist examining from the doubly-mediated position of a celluloid archeologist. He did not shoot any of the film himself, rather he scavenged it, excavated clips and represented them in an investigative collage. Lipsetts treatment both erases context and presents the film as history, contradictory as that may seem. There are no titles to lend insight into what, who or where we are looking, or why we are being shown certain clips. It is up to the viewer to look, listen, connect and glean meaning through Lipsetts post-historical lens.
