The ARTaud school, a free, conceptual, and invisible university, was founded in London, Ontario on April 23rd, 2004 by Amelia Does and Mary Fogarty.
Does and Fogarty presented awards to their colleagues and friends at the University of Western Ontario, wearing knee socks, kilts and school jackets complete with matching crests. The first students were recruited and plans began to take shape for future events and classes.
The next formal event will be held at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada in May of 2005.
The ARTaud school is supported by the Zryd-Takahashi foundation, as well as the Parallel Academic Universe Project. The ARTaud school was conceived as a manifestation of the achievements of the dead patriarchy: the great artists of the past. Actor, mystic and theorist Antonin Artaud, filmmaker Arthur Lipsett, and visual artist Joseph Beuys are some of the giants upon whose shoulders we stand. The school’s motto is:
The patriarchy is dead, long live the patriarchy!
The school was originally created to maintain a network for people who met in London Ontario at UWO, however it consists also of members from across Canada who have never attended university.
Because the school has no classes, no buildings, no programs or degrees, it is not physically a university, rather it is a continuous school of inspiration for those who want an ‘element’ of education in their lives.
The school however has hosted an awards ceremony, it has it’s own t-shirts, a poet laureate, an artist-in-residence and portraits of the founders (Fogarty and Does) and Antonin Artaud were recently commissioned for the great hall, which doesn’t exist. We always welcome new members.
