•-- ASPHALTOLOGY - 14 STATIONS OF THE ROAD
When a species continuously spoils its nest it's the beginning of the end.

introduction

Dedicated to Frank van Mens, Artist. September 8, 1952 - April 25, 2001.
A friend and colleague who shall always be remembered. An invaluable influence to all who knew him.

ASPHALTOLOGY deals with the frenetic urgency around this globalization phenomenon orchestrated by an elite group of nations calling themselves the G8. Escalating globalization, slithering superhighways, shameless exploitation, actual and imminent environmental disasters, am I imagining things? Are we under the spell of G8 madness or a global wisdom that requires patience and cooperation? My focus is simply straight down, on the asphalt. There to test the truth of G8 rhetoric by observing its practical consequences.

The splash. It begins with a splash
The ecstasy of ejaculation
The illusion of freedom and prosperity
On the road
Fill up   rev up   speed up
Ominous signs of entrails
Everywhere
The cost... enormous.

I am just as afraid as you are.
It can be exhilarating at times
overwhelming
I fall easily into a trance and
arrive at my destination oblivious
of what it took to get there.
I am just as afraid as you are.

"Everything is already there in art –
like in a big stew, everything is
already in it, you just put your
hand in and find something for
yourself. It was already there, like a piece of meat."
                    (De Kooning)

The process in this "theater of the absurd?"
"Everything must be thrown painstakingly into a furious chaos."
"It is right that from time to time cataclysms occur which compel us to return to nature, to rediscover life."
                    (Antonin Artaud)

"Il guérit toutes sortes de maladies."
(Mark 1, 34)

"Playing double or nothing with nature...
a full-blown and planet-wide
schizophrenia now rules: even as
all sorts of ecological measures
are being taken, even as a strategy
for the proper use of the world,
for an ideal interaction with the
world is being deployed. There is a simultaneous
proliferation of enterprises of destruction, a total unleashing of the performance principle."
(Jean Baudrillard)

It is not all hopeless because
in spite of it all life forces its way
through our fantasies and nightmares to insist that it is not simply about us.

"I lose touch with what I am doing from one moment to the next, find it again and lose it... It has to be this way, for I believe in chance... One never paints what one is looking at, or thinks one is looking at. One paints in a thousand vibrations the shock which one has received."
                                       (Nicolas de Stael)
