introduction
dvGarage - a QuickTime-only site dedicated to "training the next generation of visual media artists" - offers an assortment of online tutorials that you can view for free. Alex Lindsay, chief vision officer and co-founder of dvGarage, says that the site is designed to teach individuals who are excited about visual media the "tricks of the trade" and to offer a place to trade ideas with others around the world.

Alex Lindsay is a former member of Industrial Light and Magic's Rebel Mac Unit, where he worked on both the Star Wars Special Editions and Phantom Menace. If you were impressed with the Queen's chrome ship in Phantom Menace, then you've seen his work.

The site's series revolves around video tutorials that observe the real world in detail - and then offer strategies to recreate that reality. "We're focused on training people's eyes, not their fingers," says Lindsay. "Training someone to push buttons is not difficult but training them to see what's missing is a much greater challenge."

The site is an amazing place to hang around and learn. There are three types of tutorials to watch, all in the Attention To Detail Series. To begin there is the Attention To Detail Daily Series, a daily exploration of the world around us. Then there is the Attention To Detail Weekly Series, a weekly exploration into the art of computer graphics. And finally you can watch the Morning Dailies, a daily inspection and critique of work from around the world.

Also make sure to visit the Break Room, where there are discussion boards and where Alex Lindsay answers many visitors' questions. Then go to a section called The World and look at The Gallery. There are some wonderful movies to watch, especially the ones from Zimbabwe.

I highly recommend dvGarage.

Excerpt from an interview with Alex Lindsay by Jean-Eric Hénault at CG Channel
"Many computer artists seem to be stuck. They know they haven't made it yet but they don't know how to get there either. It's not because they don't have the talent, it's because most don't have the opportunity to be in environment that supports their growth. They don't get input they need to move forward. The industry is in its infancy and schools are really struggling to get a grip on training. And most people don't even have a struggling school to go to.
"dvGarage is working to provide a virtual environment for career growth. We are dedicated to giving away the keys to kingdom at every turn. We kind of think of ourselves as the magician whose willing to tell the world the tricks of the trade. Right now, we're teaching quarter tricks. Soon, we will be providing much more."
